Eighth-grade math teacher Anna Pope just shot and killed a rampaging school shooter with her own gun. Rewinding from that incident, Anna finds herself fighting to hang onto all that she has always loved about teaching—but it’s tough. Her marriage has collapsed, and she feels unsafe tutoring a violent student one-on-one. Alone at home and becoming insecure at work, she buys a gun, then begins carrying it to school. When a disturbed student shoots his way into her classroom, Anna becomes the good guy with a gun who stops the bad guy with a gun. But her heroism takes a personal toll, and revelations from the ensuing investigation are shattering. Finally, from an unexpected encounter, Anna experiences a catharsis from her horror and guilt—and rediscovers, if only for a moment, the joy of teaching.
A Good Guy … takes steady aim, lets fly and leaves its audience stunned, pensive, and plenty angry.
Taut, suspenseful, and engrossing. There is not an ounce of fat in the spare economy of this play written by David Rambo. … I barely took a breath through the play's brisk 75 minutes.
A high-caliber drama that puts the phenomenon of school shootings in the crosshairs and hits a bullseye.
Rambo has an intricate, exquisite sense of plotting, with the elegance of physics.
Rambo constructs a taut drama with dialogue that permits no room for anything extraneous.
Meticulously constructed, incredibly intimate play.
Haunting, relevant and visceral.
This short, but very thoroughly argued, play reveals the complexities that take place when there is a “good guy with a gun.” … A well-balanced discussion of a difficult subject and, as such, it is a must-see event.
Emotional, frightening and compassionate.
Guaranteed to hold audiences spellbound. Gripping, suspenseful, surprise twist-packed. This is powerful, thought-provoking stuff.
