Synopsis

Eleven-year-old Marie ('Rie) loves ballet, but she always gets cast as a chorus tree. When she falls in love with Edgar Degas' first sculpture, The Little Dancer (La Petite Danseuse) she wills herself back in time to become the artist's model. But Monsieur Degas does not want a model—Monsieur Degas is going blind. 'Rie must work much harder than she thought to become a famous work of art, and Degas must overcome his failing eyesight to work with the smartest model he's ever encountered. Together, the two of them learn to embrace the passionate challenge of making art. Dance, rhythmic language, and century-shifting action make this a dramatic adventure packed with meaning and momentum.

Media Reviews

"Sometimes the story behind a work of art can enhance our understanding of the work, can add to its resonance, can teach us what it means to be an artist and what it means to be human. Degas' Little Dancer does just that." -The Austin Chronicle
